//on this day I didn't manage to recruit a woman, although it was my main focus. I actually struggled to ask them. // No recruits //because no one was suitable//.
It's not easy.

//As a student we need to convince 10 women to let us attend their appointments, attend their birth (and ideally, accoucher their birth) and see them postnatally afterwards. We are supervised throughout, but we're essentially their caregiver throughout. We are supposed to sell our services as a student- that the woman will get more support, they'll have a face they'll know through what could become challenging times, continuity of care: someone who knows their case throughout, all that.

For most of my time as student, I didn't feel like I was going to really be able to offer that: but I played the fake it til you make it card//

The women needed to be:

1. willing to do all appointments on a Wednesday afternoon ( or at least a Wednesday - I'm willing to come early).

2. someone that actually wants a student (to hang around and do things with them)

3. Is not further along than 30 weeks.

4. Wants a midwifery model of care - or is relatively uncomplicated and not headed towards the doctors clinic instead of the midwives clinic.
//In hindsight this became one of the key reasons I'd loose women. Their diabetes would get worse, and they'd get kicked into the doctor's clinic and no one would tell me. I'd find out weeks after the fact when I went to look up their file to see where they went. I only checked when women.

Trying not to feel like a puppy dog, is difficult.

//One of the women we booked in at the clinic: //Met a lovely African lady who had separated from her husband after many years of trying to get pregnant and at 39 thought there was no hope, and then bam! first boyfriend and I guess no condom or protection and pregnant right away. She isn't currently in a relationship with this, said, boyfriend. How emotional of a journey is that going to be. //no I didn't manage to recruit her, she wanted a different clinic day.//

By the end of that day I had 0 women. To be fair, it was only week 1 /40
