Orientation to maternity unit this morning post an amazing 2 week holiday stay-cation due to oxyam 2019 and might I say it was a fairly successful event for myself if only 50% successful for my team.

Met Kate and you can see that she is an A++ motivator and promoter of love for all women and their babies and also for us students.

//(but in hindsight, goody two shoes and how the hell did she have those difficult conversations with women who wanted to formula feed their babies rather than breast feed; without feeling a little guilty for guilt tripping a woman). I guess the moral here is it's all about being baby friendly?
....

If the women won't advocate for their child, we should? It's not our baby. The woman is going to go home, and do what she planned to do all along. Is one conversation about how breast milk contains child from antibodies, increases their chance to have better immune systems and be less sickly, and in-turn, prevent depression with the woman who has a well bonded and less sickly child. I digress.//

Fairly nondescript day but 1:1 orientation-- that's extraordinarily expensive. I should of questioned why Frank, myself and Karina (the other students) were not being orientated together //but it's not my money//.

Kate pointed out a lot of things that she felt SSH staff were not doing well on. For example finishing paperwork fully and not leaving lines of info blank which leads to issues with the next staff taking over.

//The entry ends here. In hindsight I return to the same problem I see all the time in Midwifery. Staff are overloaded with paperwork, and buzzers beg to be answered. When a midwife is choosing between paperwork and working directly with the women, we are trained from day 1 - and it's in our nature also - to put the woman's needs first above the paperwork. However, what do management see? Paperwork is not completed. Funny how this is pointed out on my first day as an issue//.
