Point wolstoncroft race day
Jan. 17th, 2021 08:10 pmToday was a beautiful race day.
Full of new faces, and new hope, and many new members: enough for a full boat + reserves!
I was volunteering for the day; trying to help get the boats out, trying to support the team, trying to feild what was wrong with committee (too many half arsed people performing a thankless role without gusto : encumbered by their own lives and paid priorities).
Not unlike my own job as secretary.
I didn't really realise how bad a job auntie was doing as prez until the car ride home with Jen.
The day ended 30 mins early because it got so windy, a boat capsized during the seniors race.
I was elated for the early mark after feilding what felt like both sunburn and windburn on my face and toes that felt perpetually wet. So wet, I couldn't apply sunscreen properly because of course, i hadn't prepared a foot towel for the occasion. Currently at least, my feet don't look burnt so that's a plus.
The mixed crew made the major finals and placed 5th (pretty good considering we are 50% seniors, 80% new and missed the first 3 races of the season due to lack of numbers signing up to both training and the race).
The weather, on the whole, was lovely.
The drive back, albeit tiring (and must have been worse for my driver who had spent 2 weeks of hell organising the race/accomodation/crew/fixing problems with the membership systems: all problems unbeknownst to myself - largely driven by our presidents lack of understanding that, as a president you need to do something to actually help out, other than just stand around and talking : which is also a large part of the job too).
What is the role of the president?
Ensure smooth processes for the club. If you delegate, you need to ensure that whomever is doing the job is doing it properly, and following through. If you can't trust them, then you need to do it.
If they fail, its your fault essentially because as president you should have seen that coming.
To support the coaches. To make their lives easier. What do they need?
To support new members.
To encourage them to stay on and then in turn, support the next lot of members.
To get to know the members, and know their lives and the relationships within the team: to spot problems before they happen, and intervene if required : for the sake of keeping things peaceful and flowing and geared towards fun and success rather than bitterness and upset.
To promote the team with dbnsw : to volunteer to help out so that DBNSW doesn't see CYL as a slack team.
To ensure members have the best time possible. And to be concerned if things aren't working out, and figure out ways to promote that.
I'm not a very good secretary. Especially this year, as I've not been paddling and therefore, don't know the team. Tan too, was a much better prez when she was paddling than when she wasn't. How could I be a good president.
