Bait and Switch by Syntax6

What a humdinger of a story.

Other than my disdain for Diana Fowley because back when I was originally a fan (like in the 2000s) I had my head so far up the MSR dream I literally couldn't look at her. Now, 20 years later on the rewatch of the show - being able to be so distant is a real blessing because it has let me enjoy fic I'm sure I would have written off back in the day.

Once again, reading with no blurb. The story starts with "Chapter one" so literally, I had no idea where it was going (just trust Syn, she knows what she's doing) - and there was a rather large portion of Diana Fowley (but so nicely written I just couldn't resist) and midway the story just takes off.

It has murder, Skinner being a bro, Mulder being the hero and Scully grappling with the CSM all in one story that took about 5 hours to read (non stop once I hit midway).

Ending so neatly into S7 Requiem.

What a treat.

My only negative is that surely, Mulder would have gotten some charges for what he did to Riviera.

But we don't read stories like this to have that much realism.

I can't scorecard this. It's A+++ for all counts.

This goes on my top 10 list

It's on my top ten list, too. The M/S sex scene was so tense it made my head explode. Absolutely brilliant from start to finish. No matter how AU her fics are, she nearly always manages to bring them back to the canon universe by the ending.

There is not a lot of realism in the x-Files universe, so yeah. Mulder is being protected from on high, otherwise he'd be out on his ear and in prison, multiple times over during the series.

Have you read any of her mystery crime novels?

Sorry I missed this post in 2020. I think my husband had just gotten--or was getting--diagnosed with a single lung met.

Yes. I've read her first series and the first two of her second series. They are good. Sounds like you miss it? Reading? I certainly did. But I worked part time and he worked long hours. We were both exhausted and we had only one child. It got easier once he went to preschool.
