The Magician Series parts 1,2,3,4
Nov. 25th, 2020 11:53 amI just finished reading the Magician series.

It even has it's own artwork. This one I found by Theresa on X-Libris is so good- it depicts the validation scene very well.

with a massive cast of original characters that are so loveable even before I planned to re-read it, the first thing I thought about was "oh yes! I remember Tarnor!!!" he's so cute.
The first part deal with M and S finding themselves in a different world amongst a war -which they become instrumental in winning.
The second is that of King Andalor wanting to "find himself" and shirk responsibility by visiting M and S's world only to discover that it is.. nothing like the Realm, and the Realm beings-- our beloved characters find themselves on Earth searching for Andalor with M and S.
It reminds me a lot about the Crown actually, which was an odd juxtaposition I must admit. (I'm up to 4x5 of The Crown having binged 14 episodes - s3 to half s4 in one day).
In the Third - The Realm is under attack from a Dark Queen (black magic) Andalor is betrothed to one he does not love (just like Charles and Diana really: that scene in 4x3 when they are in front of the cameras showing the engagement ring and the paps say "you two look very much in love" and Charles says "whatever being in love means") - and M and S return to assist Tarnor/Reinald/Jouardin/Aldara to beat the Dark Queen.
The fourth - Andalor and Shannon have a child who is kidnapped, and this one is told from Skinner's POV. It's a little boring at the beginning, especially if you've just read parts 1-2-3 and know The Realm really well, because it spends a lot of it rehashing what it's like (through Skinner's eyes). The romance here is very cute.
There is a tonne of action, fight scenes, magic spell creation -- all sorts of things that I don't think I'd ever have really been into (for example, I never really liked the Narnia chronicles... or Lord of the rings or any other Fantasy genre titles) but somehow when you put M and S into it, my interest goes up 10 fold. The writing is really good, can't fault the quality. I tried to take a break from The Realm and trawled through a random archive-- only to find it full of spelling errors and downright mistakes that just had me running back to finish The Magician right until the end.
I didn't read part 3.5 as the description said it contained little of M and S. I'm sure I have read it in the past, but I'll give it a skip this time around. I've spent about a week reading The Magician, a lot of it staying up until 01:00 and waking at 05:30 to finish it off.
Score card:
Characterisation of canon characters: A
Characterisation of original characters: A
Smut: A- (very interesting take with with the whole pairbond thing)
Overall writing: A+ (seriously, completely describing a new world must be a lot of work)
I wonder what the writers Jennifer Lyon and Suzanne Bickerstaff do for work, and where they are today ...
I also need to slow down on reading the fanfic. It's giving me dark eye circles and a distinct feeling of neglecting one's life todo's.
