This is the third story I've read by Jenna Tooms.
Located here: http://fluky.gossamer.org/author/10294-1.html

Apparently it took about 3 years to write, and it shows in the quality of her storyline and writing.

M and S starts a relationship, and S magically cured during a case of all her ailments (including fear of sex stemming from when pfaster kidnapped her) then gets pregnant, and CSM believes the baby is the next either it was: cure for all diseases? vaccine against the aliens? or the next coming of Christ. It changes throughout the story. (It did take 3 year to write, maybe Jenna got a little lost during those three years). To escape her, M and the child being used as genetic material for studies - S up and runs away to a tiny town. However M finds her (in a really cute way too) - and CSM isn't far behind. Then ensues my favourite 2nd part of the story: where Jenna takes us on a tour of how M and S got together, and how they handled the relationship in terms of their work lives. I felt out of all of it that was the most realistic section of the story.

I was holding my breath throughout all of part 2 however, because intermingled with all the flashbacks and memories, S kept getting kidnapped, and M kept having to find her (multiple times) which served to feed my heart for adventurefic.

With some pretty chilling original characters: John Silver and his little "family" was a big part of part 1. I don't think in 2 at all, or 3. But when he popped up right in the end in part 4 I nearly had a heart attack it was so unexpected.

It felt as though when Jenna was writing it, she had planned that re-entrance all along and was just waiting and waiting and waiting and plying us with some gentle storyline and sweet fluff bits (M and S buying a house in England for their family) - to then have her re-kidnapped right when she's about to give birth.

There were some plot points that seemed really eye rolly: Kurt Crawford "convincing" CSM to give up the baby? CSM being put in jail. M and S coming out from hiding to get married at Christmas with her family (honestly, if someone was after me as badly as CSM, you can be assured I wouldn't come out of hiding for some sickly sweet fluffy marriage scenes). But I think that was in CSM's plan all along: why kidnap the fruit prior to it being ripe? -- M and S "holidaying" in Europe also sounded quite eye rolly but sweet. M being loaded.-- Pheoebe Green coming back and trying to seduce M when S was kidnapped for the 3rd or 4th time was also confusing. In the end, Jenna wraps it up neatly and sweetly. M and S have a new life now, in England. M works for "The Yard" instead of the FBI. In the story he always says how much he loved Oxford and England so its fitting that they end up there; but S leaving behind her family isn't brought up at all. There's so much going on in the story, you'd almost forget she has a whole family back in the USA.

The worst part: first line treatment of PPH was "to give S a blood transfusion". Someone didn't do their homework in writing this. Every midwife knows its a good fundal rub - plus oxytocin IMI, and if its still bleeding: oxytocin infusion, syntrometrine, ergometrine and or misoprostal PV/PR or buccal.
Barring those drugs its then, bimanual compression/and theaters for a bakari baloon, or B lynch suture or at the worst, a hysterectomy.

Yet they kept talking about a transfusion. LOL. Nursing ruined me for all medical -- and midwifery has ruined me for anything birth related.

There were some really beautiful scenes; S hiding in the church, her little apartment in the middle of nowhere where she made those friends at the diner, the creepy 500 year old house they purchased in England. Jenna set up a universe that could continue well into all sorts of directions; if she ever wanted to come and play again.

In any case:

Score card:
Characterisation of canon characters: B+
Characterisation of original characters: A+
Story line: B+
Smut: B
Overall writing: B+

I think its time to re-read The Magician Series before I get bored of re visiting the world of fanfiction and miss out on that gem...
