So I was trolling through the Whispers of X archives. I'm almost done with the 3rd part of Wintersong's The lost/found series (but to be honest not entirely understanding exactly what's going on in it - like I think I get the gist... the writing is stellar.. I keep reading).

Back to the one I actually finished super quick, by Andrea (its not that long - and its written in a very simple style making it a fast read). It's such a weird feeling when you come across a title and author and you remember having so much fun reading it the first time around, that you can't wait to re-read it but you can't remember what happens: until you read the first paragraph and it all comes rushing back.

It's a cute little story, where M and S become literal insta-parents in what is essentially, 1 day. They fall into their roles as husband and wife a little too easily. It's all told from the POV of S, and in it she hopes that M will fall in love with her, like she loves him, and she doesn't know how to tell him but hopes eventually when he does fall in love with her, she'll be able to tell him (a really common theme I've noticed in many xf fanfics.)

When I think about the series, after my recent re-watch, I think they always sorta knew where the other was in regards to the relationship. You can see points where M tries something on with S (FTF, Triangle) only to be pushed away like he's more of a brother than anything but then she warms up to the idea (The Rain King/Millenium) In my own head, clearly, in All Things/Hollywood AD, DD and GA spent a lot of time giving the audience as much info to signal that those two were together. The how and angst of it all (if there was any) is sort of brought up in All Things, kinda sorta, in a weird hippy way. Just the one episode, never to really be mentioned again unless you count the angst where S has to go through all the angst of loosing M, finding M, burying M, and then, realising he's alive -- tries to save M - inadvertently killing him worse -- until when Skinman chooses S's baby over M's life, inadvertently finds his cure...

It's all a bit too much when I write it out in sequence, isn't it.

Fanfic is lovely, and slows down all the nitty gritty relationshippy stuff I love so much. The sex scenes are so fake, but they all are.

It surprises me how easily Andrea gets S to allow herself to acquiesce to the trappings of parenthood and a husband so easily. There's no inner turmoil or missing of "work" (and its not like she planned and then had 9 months to get used to the idea -- its literally in 1 day she decides yes, and then the next day they have 2 kids). In the spirit of NC17 the worst of her worries is when the adopted son at age 4? walks in on her and M. Which inadvertently seals their adoption as their relationship is categorised as "legit" rather than a ploy to get the money of the kid's original parents.

The story is sweet and I spent some decent time looking for the sequel to find that it isn't on gossamer (shock) but is listed in whispers of x: but the link is broken, to find it mentioned on another fic rec website https://txf-fic-chicks.tumblr.com/post/152303711143/post-colonization-au-tuesday where you can see even in 2016, people were enjoying Andrea's work and looking for the sequel.

No one found it. Or if they did they didn't post it.

I went to fanfiction.net which is where I might have read it as it was being written, but found that place absolutely a nightmare to navigate. I emailed the author. I want to (re)read this sequel.

Well if I couldn't find Andrea on ff.net I found myself LOL well before I had a pseudonym sorted https://www.fanfiction.net/u/35207/Ritaann My favourites list leaves little to be desired also. I think as a 13 yr old I actually had a notebook where I wrote out lists of what I was reading (how old school and also, how ... unuseful). Today I found babyfic/kidfic archives: http://mulderscreek.com/nurseryfiles.html

There's a website for everything in this universe I tell you... and yet this fic eludes me. I feel incomplete having not re-read the 2nd part.

That's one of the fun things when you have large archives of ff at your disposal. Finding the gems take old fashioned guessing and clicking and trying and tossing... (lists make it easier). Someone listed If there's a will on the 10 greatest fanfics list. I'm not sure I'd put this work by Andrea on my top 10 list but it definitely was memorable.

Ok bit of detective work, I found Andrea on FF.NET but shes listed as Andreax (but the titles are the same as some of whats on gossamer so I'm sure its her) -- but "There's a way" isn't listed there either! Grumble.

Is it just me, or in the 90s and even til early 2000's people wouldn't ordinarily reference their significant other (unmarried) as partner, but now it's normal and accepted. While in the x-files it was always utilised in the law enforcement sense, if one was to watch the series now, as someone used to identifying a significant other as "partner" the series might have a different feel to it compared to watching it the first time around in the 90s...Or not. Just spitballing here.

Update, the email to Andrea bounced. Figures, since it was a hotmail address.
