Scully's back from Africa, Mulder's still recuperating from when they tried to switch his brain with CSM's.
To welcome themselves back to "normality" Mulder drags up a casefile that doesn't remotely smell of paranormal bouquet he so fondly looks for - but somehow, amongst the rouble of small town America they find a "Rain King" like relationship that mirrors what Mulder experienced in Amor Fati.
There's Mulder and Scully
and Gretta and Frederick.
Gretta has a secret power: she can read minds, but only the mind of Frederick.
They're essentially soul mates. Or Soul friends. Who need to be together for both happiness and health (especially of Gretta who becomes ill with headaches from attempting to stay out of Frederick's mind).
The prose is beautiful
The orange-tinted moon seems to have been eating too
many carrots. She knows it's just smog reflecting
city lights, but she thinks of celestial dairies and
lunar cheese, moon mice with tiny pick-axes. She
hadn't expected it to be so dark just yet. She isn't
quite used to autumn. Her internal clock ticks with
hot sunlight, salt-watered, gritty with sand and
sleeplessness. Less than two weeks ago she looked out
over the choppy surface of a bloody tide, slept in a
tent woven with locusts, dreamt she'd lost his
heartbeat.
The UST is thick, but not sexual. Bittersweet.
The story meanders and I get confused as to where it's going exactly at times.
The whole thing almost reads more like a comment on their relationship of S6 and how it may have progressed behind the scenes to more than friendship.
I'd read it more for the writing and the prose. The almost poetic like quality and clear intent with which JET describes certain scenes. It's neither suspenseful nor action filled. It's angsty and you just need to go for the ride.
The sort of thing you read when your in-between action filled fanfiction series. Not the main meal, not the weekend party, but perhaps the Tuesday afternoon-tea break. Calm before the storm.
