Nothing is as authentic as pen on paper //Disagree, nothing beats banging on the keyboard//. Today was my 2nd day in maternity on the floor. Someone did ask me how birth unit went //my first rotation// and I said "Yeah..." and didn't elaborate. I must have sounded like I didn't have a good time (honestly it was neutral) because she then said that "the people are nicer in maternity". I've only been there 2 days and both days the midwives have tried to assure me it's not usually "this messy" aka. uncontrolled, busy (I'm sure it's always busy). //It is. Midwives put up with way too much shit without complaining//.
Did my oral medication reaccreditation (is it "re" if the last one I did was first rotation at regional hospital //8 years ago//) and it took 1.5 hours. The CNE gave me feedback- she wished I took more initiative with the meds //aka. dole out PRN's as much as possible to avoid having women to ask for medications -- it does reduce the workload on others if you can avoid having to do meds outside the rounds time. ICU meds go like this: oh xyz is due. okay I go get it. I check it. I make it up. I give it. NEXT. There's no "oh would you like some paracetamol? Oh your not sure, but you had a 2nd degree tea and sutures down there, your in pain? well paracetamol would help. Oh you change your mind? sure, here, have some."//
The test was fiddley: 4 different medications and explanations and I think one patient //I think I meant to write woman// was thinking I'm someone who doesn't know what their doing (admittedly an NESB woman) but I got through it & there's one more day to go on this at least. At the end of the day my RN Clare felt sick and went home early- and she forgot to sign/and explain to the PM shift regarding bed 12's 0800 and 1200 insulin -- how on earth was that missed? and since I was doing meds with Clare they questioned me re: what happened?! //I didn't know// and the other RM (lisa) had to write a note even though she didn't know the full story. //We tried to make it work//.
//The medication system is clunky, and difficult to work with. I missed the ICU system at MSH so much. It is clean, simple, much like a paper med chart but without the terrible handwriting.//
