I've decided they are terrible. They ruin my schedule and reduce by 2 days (rather than 1) how many shifts I can pick up at SSH per week. There's the day of the night shift (night shift starts at 1930. so I can't very well do a morning shift from 0700 to 1530 and still be well rested for night shift) Then they ruin the day after, as I finish at 08:00 and getting up to work again at 13:30 til 22:00 would put me at risk for mistake

Right between Watching the netflix comedy called "unlearning" by Loyiso Gola
-which in which he very interestingly tried to implant in the minds of his (wider) audience (I say wider because it seemed to me that it was filmed in his home country, majority not white) about the impact of race and why black people just "Can't let go" like his white counterparts try to get him to.

The netflix doco on China called "The China Hustle"
- which told of a loophole Chinese companies exploited to suck money out of American investors both mum-and-pop types as well as larger companies who were lied to by the Chinese companies as to their size and wealth and growth, and the small American investment firms who use short selling to make money in return and then, release reports to screw the companies over.

Apparently the scam is still ongoing as the American government doesn't have power in an overseas country. Thus the scammers are "immune" from prosecution. Of course the Chinese government doesn't care. Their citizens are getting free, clean money.

and finished off another netflix doco called "Fyre: the greatest party that never happened".
Which basically says that wealth and fame is hard work that actually pays dividends: is hard to obtain and can be ruined in an instant : -- and that if something is too good to be true, it probably is. And if your dumb enough to buy something off nothing more than a video advertisement where there are no actual reviews, no actual content- except a bunch of models running in sand. Then you... have been conned.

I slept. Way too much.

I saw Jim and Pam's wedding last week and it drives home what I think about most weddings. That they aren't anything to do with the people whose actually getting married, that rather its a box to tick for their families (and or friends, in this case with The office).

I realised I've not booked a shift at SSH until April 12.

There are 3 potential days that I could book a shift but that means zero days off (except sleep days after nightshift). So I'm guarding those carefully. If I happen to feel like it the day before; and they still have a shift available perhaps i'll go in.

One of my classmates just started her BU rotation. So she's looking for me on the floor. Rita, when will I see you. That's when I realised I hadn't booked anything for 3 weeks.

On Tuesday, one of my women from my student year contacted me. Via text. She must have kept her yellow card. I put what I thought was an inconspicuous sticker on each card- for the midwife. So that whomever had that woman, when she came in, would not struggle in the slightest to find my number and phone me to come in and sort out the woman.

Sometimes it was super effective and I managed to keep track of the women easily. Often, if something happened in clinic and I missed it (like say they moved from midwives to doctors clinic)- No one would think to call me. So that was annoying.

Anyhow.

So that sticker is how i figured she got my number and my name fully. She wanted to meet up so I could meet her daughter (who is a year old now) and give me a gift.

Honestly, the gift is fully unnecessary. And this was right after I watched the netflix doco "The College Admissions Scandal" so I fully am aware of bribes (Great doco btw. Really explained what happened -- all the key playrs . So I was already worried since Tuesday as to what this gift might be. She was such a nice lady. And I did want to see her daughter and see how she was going in general.

All my women who helped me in my student year were precious to me. Without them, allowing me to be there for all their stuff, I would never have graduated. I have been meaning to write a post about my memories of each one but... I'll get there.

Her daughter was so sweet.

We took photos and she sent them back to me <3

The gift turned out to be a basket full of chocolate, a flask for hot water, Burt's bees hand cream, candles and tea.

I took the basket into the postnatal ward after the visit and gave the chocolates to the staff there. I talked to the NUM briefly (acting NUM) who was like why don't you come work casual for MISH? I said well. I'm at Blacktown now and you guys did reject my group, so. I'm happy there now. She looked a little sad by that. But that's the honest truth and I understand that it was all about money(We ain't no 1st yrs). But anyways. That's the system oh by the way - here's like 2 packets of tim tams and ferrero box and also a toblerone for taking me into your training program because I really enjoyed it (I really did) and I felt cared for as a student (I really did) even though you did throw us out afterwards (government funding doesn't go beyond the student year).

Can't wait to use the flask. I should put my sticker on it. After all I still have a page left somewhere. I'll pop the card in my diary for safe keeping.

Seeing her again, drives home the importance we midwives play in the lives of these women. I already feel a great burden with the work (much more than with nursing and taking care of critically ill individuals). We help women become mothers, families are created. It's important stuff. I find it enormously stressful.
