Catchup post 1: double at SSH - 8/6

I've been rather slack on blog posts as of late due to prioritisation of sleep and rest which whilst it improves my work day, reduces the quality of categorisation and reflection of my experiences.

My perceptions and thoughts have evolved in 7 days, and feelings are never as strong as they are ATOR.

These now serve as memories rather than daily updates I suppose but I am determined to keep up the momentum that was raised during the painful (and thankfully short) period that was "new graduate midwife" or was it just the pain of being in a new hospital and not knowing who you can trust and who you can't trust to help you through the transition.

I had been burned more than a few times as a new graduate nurse and again in my transitions program so it wasn't like the first time when I had no fear.

Plus the stress of being paid as an RM 8 without the RM 8 level of experience.

This is how they reward you for jumping off the cliff into a new field, I suppose.

It's surprising the amount of detail I remember when I bother to sit down and go through it properly. Offloads the brain.

Continued catch-up - Three 12s in ICU

Wednesday )
At 04:00 there was an email from the big boss to say all nursing staff were not to use their phone on the floor.

I've been keeping it in my locker anyway due to all that stuff with This

Someone wondered out loud in the tea room if anyone ever failed their IP. And I could think of a few that had "moved on".

If you want to stay, and no one wants you - you can always go to neuro-ICU, they'll take anyone. Thing is, most people don't want to work in what is sometimes considered a "dead end ICU" for being "much too specialised" (which I disagree with and that's another topic for another day). I loved my 4.5 almost 5 years there.

I left that shift forgetting to put my name on the 2 person list and wondering if I'd get 2 pt 2 days in a row again.

Thursday )

Friday )
Now I'm all caught up.

Long weekend full of absolutely f-ing nothing in particular (for once) lays in wait.
Oh the things I want to do *cough* read *fanfiction* cough.

My review of "Pillar of Salt" by Nascent

I don't think I've read this ff before, but I pulled it off The crackvan and then again off Nascent's page at Gossamer

It's a riveting movel at 237 K (approx 4-5 hours to read). The storyline is very much like an x-files casefile/monster of the week - except one that has way more than 45 minutes to be fleshed out nicely.

Nascent suggests the story might be determined as MSR or as M/S friendship depending on how you want to view the story and I can see elements of both as you read along. Much like the series where you can easily find elements of romance even in S1 if you look hard enough, Nascent puts work into the strong presence of UST that was around the time this FF is placed to sit (after FTF and before S6).

The science behind the story itself was fine. You can see the work Nascent put into ensuring that Dr Scully sounded exactly like Dr Scully.

Just because I don't want to spoil you if you hadn't read it -

This fic made me think of how many episodes have I rewatched only to laugh in horror at whatever weird portrayal of ICU I have seen (and to only remember thinking it was all legit as a teen). Sometimes, knowledge can be a curse.

I’d talk more about the storyline but it was a very enjoyable experience to trust Wendelah’s rec on crackvan and just go along for the ride.

I don’t think I’d put it on my list of ‘top 10 fanfics’ but definitely in the category of - what to read when you miss X-files casefile episodes from that in-between time of S5-6, where M and S have enough experience of each other to be friends - almost more but not quite yet -and nothing is clouded with William/Mulder’s abduction and all that riff raff.

Other updates:
Still behind on work posts.
I've gotten a copy of Scavenger by Syntax6 that I'm planning to start tonight - after I give my eyeballs a rest.

My review of Scavenger by Syntax6

Clear your afternoon if your going to read this one.

I asked on the Lost and Found board and someone graciously emailed it forward.

Once you get halfway you have no chance in hell of going to bed without reading the ending.

It's got one hell of an adrenaline-filled ending.

Case-file.

Romance.

Nom nom nom.

Is a strong contender for the top 10 list.
